Plan a small-batch assembly project

Use the first build to establish a clear production and acceptance baseline.

Define what the first batch must achieve

Development testing, customer samples and a production pilot can require different quantities and documentation. Tell the supplier how the boards will be used.

Allow for fixed preparation costs

Engineering preparation, stencil fabrication, machine programming and test setup can be required even for a small quantity. Ask for these items to be separated so the first order and future orders can be compared.

Resolve material constraints early

Check component minimum quantities, packaging, lead times and any customer-supplied parts. A small assembly quantity does not necessarily mean every component can be purchased in exactly that quantity.

Agree first-build checks

  • Which file revision defines the build?
  • Who approves the first article or sample if one is required?
  • Which tests establish acceptance?
  • How are defects, rework and design changes handled?
  • What records should be retained for a repeat order?

Plan the repeat order separately

Review lessons from the first build and release any changes under a new revision. Confirm pricing and material availability again when the production quantity changes.

These guides help structure a purchasing discussion. Manufacturing feasibility and test limits must be reviewed for your specific design and application.
